Description
The Maine coast, 1929. A bloody night shattered the tranquility of Hope's End, a cliffside mansion, and the lives within. A schoolyard chant whispers of the horrors: Lenora Hope, seventeen, hung her sister, stabbed her father, took her mother’s life. Though the police never proved it, the assumption of Lenora’s guilt lingers, a shadow over the family name. She has never spoken of that night, nor left the confines of the decaying estate.
Now, in 1983, home-health aide Kit McDeere arrives at Hope's End. Her charge is Lenora, now in her seventies, mute and wheelchair-bound after a series of strokes. Lenora communicates only by tapping out messages on an old typewriter. One night, a message appears: “I want to tell you everything.” As Kit helps Lenora chronicle the events of that fateful night, a story far more complex than the rumors emerges. But when Kit uncovers unsettling truths about the nurse who fled before her, she begins to question Lenora's narrative, and the true nature of the woman she is caring for.
