About Shelf & Shadows

Every series reader knows the particular small frustration this site exists to kill. You finish a book you loved, you go looking for the next one, and you end up staring at a search page trying to work out whether the book that came out most recently is actually the one that comes next. Prequels, spin-offs, a “book 0.5”, three editions with three different covers. It pulls you out of the one thing you actually wanted to do, which was keep reading.

Look up an author or a series here and you get the books laid out in the order they're meant to be read, top to bottom, with the covers so you recognise what you already own. That's the whole idea. No forum threads to dig through, no ten-year-old blog post to cross-check against.

How we put the orders together

We build each reading order from the things that actually settle it: where a book sits in its series, when it was first published, and how the author's own catalogue is grouped. The awkward cases are the ones worth getting right — a prequel written last, a novella wedged between two novels, a sub-series that branches off partway through. We try to place those where a reader would actually want them, and note it on the page instead of leaving you to guess.

We don't assume we've got every one perfect. Catalogues shift, and now and then we get one wrong. When a reader points something out, we look, and we fix it. There's a contact form on every page, and a real person reads what comes through it.
