In 1942, at sixteen years old, Cilka is taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau Concentration Camp. Her striking beauty draws the notice of the commandant, and she is separated from the other women. Cilka quickly learns that survival in such a place hinges on power, even when it is unwillingly wielded.
When the war ends and the camp is liberated, Cilka is not granted freedom.
