Julia Dahl is an American crime novelist and journalist who has been writing about crime since 2004, when Seventeen sent her to cover the murder of a girl at the hands of her mother. That assignment launched a long career in crime reporting that included freelance work for the New York Post, a position as deputy managing editor of The Crime Report, and a stint as a crime and justice reporter for CBS News. She began earlier as a fact-checker at Entertainment Weekly and later worked as an editor at Marie Claire. She now teaches journalism at NYU.
Born and raised in Fresno, California, Dahl spent nearly twenty years in New York City before settling in the Hudson Valley with her husband and son. She made her debut as a novelist in 2014 with Invisible City, the first book in her Rebekah Roberts mystery series.
