Between 1965 and 1972, Black students organized, demanded, and protested against racism in almost every U.S. state. They challenged institutions at over a thousand historically Black and white colleges and universities. Their fight was for Black Studies, progressive Black universities, new ideas—a diverse system of higher education relevant to the Black community. Drawing support from other student groups, they disrupted the academy. This is the first national study of that remarkable struggle, illuminating its complex context and providing a groundbreaking prehistory of Black student activism. Based on records from more than three hundred institutions, this authoritative study is essential to understanding modern American higher education. The antiracist higher education these students fought for has yet to be achieved. The parallels between then and now demand we embody the cause anew.
