Description
In 1968, on her wedding day in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Rafaela Acuña y Daubón marries Peter Brennan Jr. with romantic optimism. Her life takes a dramatic turn when she moves her young family to the American Midwest, a decision that unleashes a cascade of disappointments. Decades later, in the 1980s, Rafaela’s daughter, Ruth, desperate to belong in St. Louis, sheds her Puerto Rican language, habits, and memories. It is only when Ruth’s daughter, Daisy, returns to San Juan years later that the two women begin to truly examine the choices that have shaped their lives. When a hurricane devastates the island in 2023, critically injuring Daisy, Rafaela and Ruth return to the city of their origins. As they gather at Daisy’s bedside, they revisit the moments that led them there—their coming of age, their loves, their risks, and the heartbreaks and triumphs that define a life. Old memories surface alongside buried secrets, forcing each woman to question where she belongs. Three women, bound by geography and genetics, grapple with vastly different understandings of their past, searching for a common language to find their way back home.
