Description
Atmosphere is a novel set against the backdrop of the 1980s space shuttle program. Joan Goodwin, a physics and astronomy professor, has long been captivated by the stars. Her quiet life as an academic and aunt to Frances is upended when she sees an advertisement seeking women scientists for NASA. Suddenly, Joan is driven by a desire to be among the first women in space.
Selected in the summer of 1980 from thousands of applicants, Joan begins training at the Johnson Space Center. She joins an exceptional group, including Top Gun pilot Hank Redmond, scientist John Griffin, mission specialist Lydia Danes, Donna Fitzgerald, and aeronautical engineer Vanessa Ford. As these aspiring astronauts form friendships and prepare for their missions, Joan discovers a passion and love she never anticipated. This new perspective leads her to question her place in the universe. Then, in December of 1984, during mission STS-LR9, everything changes in an instant.
