Description
In a rural village in Chechnya, eight-year-old Havaa watches from the woods as Russian soldiers abduct her father and set fire to her home. When their neighbor Akhmed finds Havaa hiding in the forest, he makes a decision that will forever change their lives: he seeks refuge at the abandoned hospital where the sole remaining doctor, Sonja Rabina, treats the wounded. For Sonja, the arrival of Akhmed and Havaa is an unwelcome surprise. Weary and overburdened, she has no desire to take on additional risk and responsibility.
Over the course of five dramatic days in December 2004, Havaa, Akhmed, and Sonia must all reach back into their pasts. Their shared histories unravel an intricate mystery of coincidence, betrayal, and forgiveness which unexpectedly binds them, deciding their fate. This is a haunting novel, intimate and ambitious in scope, set in a nearly abandoned hospital in war-torn Chechnya. A story of the transcendent power of love in wartime, it is a work of profound compassion and lasting significance.
